Recent Victories for Animal Activism
There are many people like Keith Mann and organizations around the world that support animal rights. Causes for animal rights run the gamut from stopping animal cruelty to becoming vegan by not eating or using anything from an animal. Here are some recent victories for animal rights campaigners.
Since the murder of Cecil the lion in July of 2015, 38 airlines have halted the shipping of Africa’s “Big Five” animals: elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos and Cape buffalo. This list includes South Africa Airways, Lufthansa, Emirates, British Airways, and American-based American Airlines, Delta and United.
A bill has been introduced in Congress to ban imports of lion trophies and parts. Other representatives have announced the intention of sponsoring a bill that changes the Endangered Species Act to ban trophy killings.
Cat dissection has been abolished in the Miami-Dade school district which is one of the largest in the US. Also in response to PETA, Harding Charter Preparatory High School in Oklahoma City has stopped cat dissections.
In April, 2015, General Mills officially announced its support for polled breeding. PETA had informed them that dairy cows have their horns removed by gouging them out or burning them. Polled cattle are hornless naturally so breeding them promotes humane treatment of cattle.
The official title of California’s Proposition 2 is the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act. It is a law passed to protect farm animals and became effective on January 1, 2015. It states that calves that are raised for veal, hens raised for eggs and pregnant pigs must have enough room to be able to stand, lie down, turn around freely and extend all their limbs. In addition, all whole eggs sold in stores in California must comply with this law.
Organizations that support animal rights include People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Humane Society of the United States, Oceana, Greenpeace, Animal Aid and Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM). Other well-known activists include celebrities like Betty White, Ricky Gervais, Ellen Degeneres and Paul McCartney.
Keith Mann on amazon is a very active animal rights supporter in Britain. He authored the book From Dusk ’til Dawn: An Insider’s View of the Growth of the Animal Liberation Movement. The Animal Protection Party supported him in a failed bid as an electoral candidate in 2010.
