The immigrants who are coming in the state of Arizona tend to be treated in a deplorable way. They travel in shipping containers. They are kept in warehouses all across the state territory. The warehouses are under the supervision of the Department of Homeland Security. Not even basic human needs are being provided to these migrants.
These immigrants along with unaccompanied children are housed in these warehouses as they have been detained under different circumstances. Most of them are contesting the removal proceedings.
All these people belong to the minorities. Hence they have no money. They cannot seek legal representation. Thus their cases may not even get heard, while the relevant authorities take the decision and get them deported. In fact, the case for these immigrants may be viable in many instances. Thus it can be won in an effortless manner. All that is required is proper representation.
This kind of system means that it is mandatory for human rights activists to step forward and assist all these detainees so that their cases are heard. There is one organization known as The Florence Project that to represent the minority groups whose rights are being infringed by the authorities in this country.
This organization is trying to educate the immigrant detainees on their rights. This way they are giving them a fair chance to fight the system in a legal manner. The aim of such an organization is to provide social services to these minority groups as they are always under discrimination. Besides, such an organization will also help to advocate for the fundamental human rights in order to provide them with humane conditions.
This is where the Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund is also playing a major role. It is a champion in defending the rights of the voiceless immigrants in the state of Arizona and beyond its borders too.
This is a fund that has been financed by Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey. These are the co-founders of the Village Voice Media as well as Phoenix New Times. There was an incident in which their first amendment rights were infringed. They sued the county. The duo received a huge settlement as the ruling was in their favor.
All this happened once Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and his Maricopa County office issued subpoenas to these two journalists. They were asked to release sensitive information about the subscribers who were reading Newtimes Stories online. Even the proceedings of the grand jury required that the two journalists must disclose the names of all those who had been following the articles about the Sheriff through this online publication.
These two journalists contested that all this was violating the rights of the free press. This is where the presiding judge had awarded Jim and Michael $3.75 million.
They used this money to create a platform to fight for immigrant rights and advocate for their freedom of speech. They also support public education along with civic participation. This is a nonprofit organization that provides funding to different organizations that are supporting same values.
