After polls by NY Times revealed a lack of enthusiasm by members of the Democratic party towards this year’s Presidential election, billionaire and activist George Soros has put his money where his mouth is. Of chief concern is the perceived need for more Latino votes for a Democratic candidate. Mr. Soros and others are hoping to bring in more than 400,000 Latino and immigrant extra needed Democrat swing votes in November. The group has committed $15 million dollars to their campaign, so far. The plan is to mobilize the Latino outrage generated by Donald Trump and other far-right Republican candidates.
The strategy will be to better fund the ‘Immigrant Voters Win’ super PAC to support the organization’s efforts in states with large Latino populations that are growing, such as Florida, Colorado, and Nevada. They will also reach out to Asian immigrants. Cristóbal Alex is the president of one national group funded by the super Pac, the Latino Victory Project. He had this to say, “This is really taking the gloves off… From the first day he [Trump] attacked us, he called us rapists and thieves. We could have a giant wall built and millions of families broken apart. The country is on the precipice.”
Republican voters are swarming the primaries, but millions were missing from the Democrat side, lead by candidates Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. Democratic leaders are saying that the lackluster performance of President Obama, with his deporting of over 2 million people while in office, has given pause to Democrats who see the party as a general failure in implementing real change in the U.S.
George Soros has stated that he was struck by Mr. Trump’s negative tone and with his plan to stop immigration into the U.S. by Muslims. Mr. Soros has been a long time supporter of organizing and educating immigrants about American politics.
“The intense anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim rhetoric that has been fueled by the Republican primary is deeply offensive! It is harmful to our democracy and to our national interests. There should be consequences for the outrageous statements and proposals that we’ve regularly heard,” Mr. Soros boldly stated.
Mr. Soros is himself a political refugee from Hungary during the Cold War era. Before that, he survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary during World War II. He was born in Hungary in 1930. He is a graduate of the London School of Economics and has written several books that voice his liberal political views. George Soros has been quite active in areas of U.S. policy, especially towards Eastern Block European countries.
